The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
